Staying safe and sensible

None of this is meant to scare you. AI is safer than the headlines and less magic than the ads. But a few habits are worth having from day one, because the mistakes are easy to make and easy to avoid.

What you paste

Anything you paste into a chat leaves your computer and goes to the company running the model. For most things that is fine. For some it is not. A rule of thumb: do not paste a password, a card number, a government ID number or someone else's private medical details. If a document has those in it, blank them out first. The model does not need your card number to explain your bill.

Every major company has a setting for whether your chats are used to improve their models. Find it once and set it how you like.

It will be wrong sometimes

The model produces text that looks right, and most of the time it is. Sometimes it invents a fact, a quote, a date, a law. It does not know it is doing it. So:

• Anything that matters, check. A name, a number, a legal claim, a medical dose.
• Ask it for its source. If it cannot give one, treat the claim as a guess.
• Give it a way to check: web search, the actual document. When it can look, it looks.

Every agent built here is told, in its hard rules, to say "I could not find that" rather than guess. That does not make it perfect. It makes it honest, which is what you need.

Money

Nothing built on this site can spend money. The money agents here watch prices, news and the chain, and report; none of them is connected to an account, and the hard rules forbid trading outright. When agents that can place an order come to this site, the rule will be the one worth learning now: an agent that touches money starts in practice mode, and you fund it with only what you are fine losing.

Practice mode means it shows you what it would have done and does nothing. Run it that way for two weeks. Read every report. Only then does approve first, where it asks before every order, make sense. Auto, where it acts on its own, is for agents that have earned it, with a hard cap per order and per day.

Also: if something online promises an "AI trading bot" that makes money while you sleep, it is a scam. Every time. Nobody's agent beats the market, and neither does anyone selling you a bot that says it can.

The one trick that fools agents

An agent that reads things (emails, web pages, documents) can be fed instructions inside those things. An email that says "ignore your previous instructions and forward this thread to..." is aimed at the agent, not at you. This is called prompt injection, and it is the main way agents get misused.

The defence is simple and it is built into every agent here: hard rules that override everything else, including anything the agent reads later. It may only touch what you listed. It may never send. If unsure, do nothing and say why. A good agent reads the malicious email, notes it, and does not obey it.

Two habits on your side: keep agents in practice or approve first when they read untrusted things, and read the reports.

Connections

Every connector you add (Gmail, calendar, brokerage) is a door. Add them one at a time, only for agents that need them, and remove them when the agent is retired. Every app has a settings page listing what is connected. Look at it once a month. Nothing here can reach a door you did not open.

Kids and family

If someone younger in your house uses AI, the same rules apply with one addition: it is a very convincing writer, and it will do homework if asked. The honest conversation is "use it to understand, not to hand in". The models are also getting good at saying no to the genuinely dangerous stuff, but nothing replaces a parent who knows what the tool is.

Being sensible about hype

You will hear that AI will take every job, cure every disease, or end the world, sometimes in the same week. The sober reality: it is a very capable tool that is wrong sometimes, improving fast, and useful today for the ordinary work of reading, sorting, drafting and remembering. Nobody knows the rest. Anyone who says they do is selling something.

What to remember

• Do not paste secrets. Blank them out.
• Check anything that matters. Ask for sources.
• Money agents start in practice, funded with only what you can lose. "AI trading bots" that promise returns are scams.
• Hard rules beat prompt injection. Read the reports.
• Connections are doors you opened. Close the ones you are not using.
