What an agent is, and why now

Chat versus agent

A chatbot waits for you to type, answers, and waits again. Useful, but you are still doing the work of asking.

An agent has a job. You describe the job once, give it the tools it needs and the rules it must follow, and it does the job, on its own, taking as many steps as the job takes. Read the inbox. Find the customer emails. Draft replies. Put them in drafts. Report back. Every weekday at 8am, whether you remember or not.

That is the entire difference. Same model underneath. Different arrangement around it.

The three parts

Every agent is three things, and it helps to keep them separate in your head:

The brain. The instructions. Who it is, what its job is, what it must never do, how it reports. This is the part that takes people weeks to get right on their own, and the part this site writes for you.

The home. The AI app it lives in. Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Cursor. You paste the instructions in and that app becomes your agent. Nothing runs anywhere else. If you delete it there, it is gone.

The hands. The tools it can reach. Web search. Your calendar. Your inbox. A brokerage account. Each one is a connector you add on purpose, with a sign in, and can remove in a click. An agent with no hands can only think and tell you things, which for many jobs is exactly right.

Why 2026 is the year

Three things lined up:

1. Models got reliable enough to follow rules. Two years ago an agent would wander off its instructions after a few steps. Today's models hold a set of hard rules across a long job, and admit when they are stuck.
2. A standard for hands appeared. In late 2024 Anthropic published MCP, the Model Context Protocol, and by 2026 every major app supports it. One connector for your brokerage works the same in Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and Cursor. Before that, every connection was custom work.
3. The apps grew timers. Claude's scheduled tasks, ChatGPT's Scheduled page, Grok's Automations, Cursor's Automations. An agent that runs while you sleep used to need a programmer. Now it is a menu.

What an agent can do for you this week

Not science fiction. Things people build here on their first visit:

• Read the news about one topic every morning and tell you only what is genuinely new.
• Watch two or three competitors and tell you once a week what they changed.
• Wait for the thing you want to go on sale and say so when it hits your price.
• Plan a week of meals for your family, your diet, your budget, with the grocery list.
• Tell you what happened on a blockchain overnight, or when a token unlock is coming.
• Teach you one phrase of a language a day and quiz you on last week's.

Every one of those works from a chat window and the AI's own web search. Nothing to connect. Agents that reach into your inbox, your calendar or a brokerage are real, and this site will walk you through those too, later. For now it stays with the ones that cannot do any harm.

What an agent cannot do

It cannot want anything. It cannot decide to do something you did not describe. It cannot reach anything you did not connect. It cannot spend money it was not given, in an account it was not connected to. And a well written one cannot be talked out of its rules, by you or by anything it reads.

The three modes

An agent that can act runs in one of three modes, and the words are the same whether it sorts email or buys stock:

• Practice. Reads and drafts only. Never acts. Where every agent should start.
• Approve first. Asks before sending, posting or buying. Shows you exactly what it is about to do and waits for a yes.
• Auto. Does it and reports. Only after you have watched it in the other two modes for a while.

Most agents never need to leave practice. A morning brief has nothing to act on. Every agent this site builds today is a reading agent, so it lives in practice mode for good, and that is on purpose: learn the shape on something that cannot go wrong.

What to remember

• Brain, home, hands. We make the brain. The other two are yours.
• An agent is instructions plus tools plus rules, running on a timer if you want it to.
• Start in practice. Move to approve first. Earn auto.
• Everything an agent can reach, you connected on purpose and can remove.
